Public audit of Sanikhola MHP, Jumla

Final public audit of Sanikhola mini hydropower canal maintenance was conducted on 28th May 2018 in the presence of 102 local community participants. As with all public audits local beneficiaries appreciate the transparency and insights that these audits provide about the makeup of costs for development projects. For this programme RAP 3 has delivered 661 bags of cement at a cost of NRs 858,970 (63.44% of total costs), the total skilled manpower cost was NRs 421,600 (31.14%) the programme management cost was NRs 48,390 (3.57%), while the public audit cost was NRs 25,000 (1.85%) a small price to pay for knowing the breakdown of the total expenditure of NRs 1,353,960.

RTL field visit in Jumla

On 18th and 19th June 2018, field visit to Urthu, Dillichaur and Chhumchaur was carried by DTA Jumla along with RTL to observe RMG and SMG work. During the visit, the team interacted with RBGs/SMGs members on various issues including payment of RMGs wages, work site safety and PPEs. The team observed the quality of work at 63DR008, Urthu. Gabion assembling and stone packing works are ongoing according to the work plan through the SMG in 63DR008. RTL Rajendra Kumar Shrestha discussed effective ways of constructing gabion structures using proper engineering techniques. He suggested to speed up the SMGs work for rehabilitation of the canal to complete the assigned work within time.  He reviewed the progress update and the standard of work being carried out by RMGs in three DRCN namely 63DR010, 63DR011 and 63DR012. Routine maintenance work at these three DRCNs was found satisfactory.

SMGs final public audit in Jumla

The SMGs final public audit of road code 63DR007 was carried out on 27th April, 2018. The total amount of wages payment of NRs 312,011.62 including the remaining 20% of the previous bill of IPC 1 and 2 and administrative costs was delivered to the SMGs during the public audit. The physical progress and financial progress of road code 63DR007 are 100%. Also, the 3rd IPC bill payment for SMGs of road code 63DR008 and 63DR009 was held on 29th April, 2018 for NRs 356,928.53 and NRs 330,072.50 respectively. The physical and financial progress of 63DR008 are 85% and 83% while the physical and financial progress of 63DR009 are 55% and 50%.

Jumli Bean retailer invests in grading machine

RAP3 CONNECT have been working with Aastha General Store (AGS), Jumla to build their supply chain, sourcing retail markets and encouraging long term agreements.  AGS recently purchased a grading machine that will improve the quality of their product, increase brand value and strengthen their relationship with buyers such as Bhatbhateni.

SMGs 1st Interim Payment Certificate (IPC1)

Specific Maintenance Groups (SMGs) in Jumla DCC have been working on roads 63DR007, 63DR008 and 63DR009 since 1st February 2018. The DTA released its 1st Interim payment certificate (IPC1) for SMGs on 23rd February with amount of NRs 953, 628 i.e. 80% of total amount. The physical progress of SMGs on road code 63DR007 is 42.5%, on 63DR008 is 37.5% and on 63DR009 is 12.4%. As for financial progress of SMGs on road code 63DR007 is 34%, on 63DR008 is 30% and on 63DR009 is 9.9%.

International Women’s Day - Jumla

In Jumla, altogether 63 women are working as RAP3 members in different groups of SMG, RMG and CTEVT Internship. The Certificate of Achievement was awarded to the following five nominees.

Miss Janmaya Bohara, in recognition of her contribution of defying stereotypes, who has used her wages from RAP3 to support a family of four and volunteered to work for women’s health and care.

Miss Tara Kathayat, in recognition of her contribution to challenging social norms, by educating her two sons in Kathmandu.

Miss Suman Buda, in recognition of her contribution to Inspired/Energized communities. She sells Unilever products and has encouraged other women to participate in income generation activities.

Miss Pabita Bista, in recognition of her contribution of Achieved academic success, who worked as a CTEVT Intern at RAP3 after completing her course in Diploma in Civil Engineering.

Miss Sampurna Buda, in recognition of her contribution to leadership, who has started a new hotel and lodge and aiming to grow her business bigger.

Gravelling and widening

Guthichour Rural Municipality, Ward No. 1, Jumla has initiated a program to widen the narrow sections of road 63DR009b using excavator. The work was at full pace during a site visit by SAME on 17th January 2018. Also around 500m of the road section was seen gravelled. The road will be now easily passable to vehicles and have less chances of formation of rills during monsoon seasons. The total length of this road is 8.10 Km and 6 members of RAP3 RMG are mobilized for maintenance.

SMG: Safety training and field demonstration

On 17th January DTA Jumla conducted a safety training and field demonstration for assembling and filling of gabion boxes for SMG group of 63DR008. GE showed and explained the site safety pictures to all members of SMGs.  A safety officer was chosen from the group and he was provided with the safety checklist. Later on the procedure for assembling and filling of gabion box was explained to the groups. DTA team stayed on the site until one of the box was completely filled with rubble stones. SMG members gained much knowledge regarding safety concern and maintaining quality gabion work.

Field visit with DC and RTL, Jumla

On 29th December 2017, field visit to Bag Bazaar-Pathar Khola, Narakot and Sanigaun Micro Hydropower was carried out by DC, RTL and SAME. Routine maintenance work through Road Maintenance Group (RMG) has been completed as given work plan in road (63DR001) Bag Bazaar-Pathar Khola, road (63DR003) Acharyalihi-Narakot and road (63DR004) Acharyalihi Sanigaun. RMGs members were involved in three different groups in these different DRCN roads. Most of these roads are found fair. The work at Sanikhola MHP was halted due to frozen ice at working site. About 95% work has been already completed. DC and RTL were well satisfied with RMGs works.     

Rearranging SMG groups

DTA Jumla rearranged all SMG groups on last week of December. Around 25/26 members were included in each groups and it was necessary to exclude some members to comply with the guidelines. It was found that some members have already involved in other works and will not work with RAP 3 anymore. Remaining members whose performance were poor during first phase of specific maintenance work were excluded with coordination with all members of the group. After this rearrangement, each group was registered with around 18 members.
