Work has started on irrigation ponds in Dullu, Dailekh. Hatemalo Seed Promotion Cooperative (HSPC) are investing with CONNECT, Dullu Municipality and local communities in four new irrigation ponds that will benefit farmers in HSPC’s supply chain, increasing both cultivation area and seed production. Last year, HSPC invested in three new ponds and repaired two others in Malika, Dailekh to the benefit of 159 farmers in their supply chain.
CONNECT District Manager, Kushal Hamal has completed a cross cluster visit to Achham and Doti, part of our internal monitoring process. During the visit Kushal met with partners in Achham and Doti, poultry farmers, Ginger producer, Hamri Didis and recipients of support from KUSOM MBA students.
On April 9, 2018 CONNECT partner Shoba Trader & Order Suppliers (STOS) conducted a public meeting to share information about their business model with up and downstream suppliers, local government and community members. During the meeting the CONNECT team explained the pilot modality, objectives and areas of support offered to STOS. Mr Gopal Bhat, proprietor of STOS, explained how the financial support received from CONNECT has been utilised, the activities delivered and how STOS is supporting farmers in their supply chain through long term contracts and subsidised inputs.
During the meeting, STOS renewed contracts with 13 downstream suppliers and signed contracts with an additional 24 downstream suppliers.
On April 6, 2018 RAP3 welcomed members of the Market Development Forum Nepal’s (MDFN) for a learning event and meeting. MDFN Convener, Mr Bharat Upadhyay acted as the master of ceremony and Mr Govinda Ghimire, President, Nepal Herbs and Herbal Products Association – a CECI partner organisation - gave a presentation on the Challenges of Market System of Non-Timber Forest Products - Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (MAPs).
MDFN was formed to enable like-minded development practitioners to share knowledge and experience, and to learn about new ideas for pro-poor market development. Read more about the forum on their website.
RAP3 CONNECT have been working with Aastha General Store (AGS), Jumla to build their supply chain, sourcing retail markets and encouraging long term agreements. AGS recently purchased a grading machine that will improve the quality of their product, increase brand value and strengthen their relationship with buyers such as Bhatbhateni.
Students in Dailekh have started a copy book business!! The student members of Narayan Campus Future Entrepreneurs’ Club, which was established in partnership with RAP3 CONNECT, have started selling Narayan Campus branded copy books on campus. Students negotiated credit with a local stationery shop, purchased copy books and added Narayan Campus branding before setting up a stall on the campus to sell their product to staff and students.
The club expects to make 500 NPR profit that they will re-invest to scale the business.
